GRAMOPHONE: “Premieres” Album Review

“From Biber, Vivaldi and Vaughan Williams to Messiaen, Rautavaara and Mason Bates, composers have used string instruments – especially the violin – as an effective means of capturing birdsong and the sounds of nature. Two works included on this album of concertos for violin and orchestra, performed by violinist Gil Shaham and The Orchestra Now under the direction of Leon Botstein, form welcome additions to this list.

Having championed the standard concerto repertoire for over three decades, it’s easy to forget that Shaham is equally at home in contemporary repertoire, as evidenced by some superlative playing on this fine recording. Premieres adds yet another impressive string to the violinist’s bow, one might say.” —Pwyll ap Siôn
