Was there a teacher who was particularly impactful/helpful? What made this instructor stand out?
John Rommel was my first teacher after high school and was one of the first people to model for me what an orchestral trumpet player should sound like. As a teacher, he is endlessly supportive and selfless, always invites calm, and has a talent for getting students out of their own way.
What is the most memorable performance you ever had?
I recently had the opportunity to perform Stravinsky’s L’Histoire du Soldat and Shostakovich’s Concerto for Piano, Trumpet, and Strings only three days apart. It was so exciting and challenging to prepare two great works simultaneously.
