Was there a teacher who was particularly impactful/helpful? What made this instructor stand out?

Garrett Klein was my first trumpet teacher and he helped me early on with my development. His influence and passion inspired me to become self motivated in my pursuit of musical excellence.

What made you decide to become a musician? Was there a particular performance or person that influenced your decision?

After playing Lincolnshire Posy by Percy Grainger in High School, the composition was just so interesting that I wanted to learn more.

What is the most memorable performance you ever had?

Star Wars: A New Hope at Brevard Music Center in 2022 !

Do you have a favorite non-classical musician or band?

It’s hard to choose a favorite but recently I’ve been listening to music by Frank Zappa, The Cardiacs, Perry Como, and Count Basie.

What is a surprising part of playing your instrument that you think most people don’t know?

There are so many notes on the trumpet that are out of tune naturally, and you need to use slides to adjust pitch without affecting resonance.

What advice would you give your younger self or anyone starting out?

Be exposed as early as possible to repertoire and listen with intent. One of the most helpful tools for getting familiar with repertoire is watching YouTube videos of music combined with score following.
