Full Concert—Epic Narratives: Gernsheim and Brahms
This September 19, 2026 concert livestreamed from the Fisher Center at Bard and led by conductor Leon Botstein kicked off the Gernsheim Festival and TŌN’s 12th season. Gernsheim and Brahms were friendly contemporaries who championed each other’s music in performance. This program celebrates some of their pivotal orchestral works: Gernsheim’s powerful tone poem Zu einem Drama and his dramatic third symphony, based on the legend of the Song of Miriam; alongside Brahms’s gigantic First Piano Concerto, written over a five-year period in the 1850s, and performed by Orion Weiss.
