Pacific Music Festival, 2022
Because my older brother was learning the violin, I began studying the violin alongside him at a very young age. The pieces I played and listened to at that time are my earliest memories of classical music.
I originally started the violin believing that as I grew taller, my instrument would naturally change to the cello. I was convinced that once I entered middle school, I would automatically switch instruments.
Now, even though I once played such a small instrument, I still find it strange that I am playing such a large one today.
I originally attended a regular high school and planned to enroll in a non-music university. However, at the age of 17, I encountered the double bass in my high school wind ensemble and gradually became drawn to the instrument.
As my desire to improve grew stronger, I suddenly decided to apply to a music university without even consulting my family. It is now a fond memory.
At present, classical orchestra concerts are mainly enjoyed by a fixed audience, and it has been difficult to attract new listeners.
By incorporating advanced technologies from various fields, I hope concerts can become more intuitive and visually engaging, with stylish and beautiful presentations that enhance the music. I believe this can create performances that audiences find deeply satisfying and want to experience again.
My most memorable performance was my very first junior orchestra concert. I vividly remember sensing how the energy and momentum of all the instruments came together to create an entire world. From that moment on, I became completely fascinated by orchestral music.
During an orchestra performance, my hand slipped and I accidentally threw my bow. Since it was near the end of the piece, I pretended to keep playing and somehow made it through. It was the most panicked moment I have ever experienced on stage.
I enjoy many genres, including pop, jazz, rock, and folk music. There was a period when I listened to Queen all day long.
I secretly admire instrument makers. I have always found the way they work incredibly fascinating and cool. One of my dreams is to be able to rehair a bow by myself.
Sometimes the sound of the double bass is so low that it gets canceled out by noise canceling headphones. Also, even if I play in front of dogs, they do not wake up.
Although playing in an orchestra may appear to be purely a group activity, it actually requires each individual to be highly independent and responsible. I was very surprised when I first realized this. Bringing those individuals together into one unified sound is both the greatest challenge and the greatest joy.
If something interests you, it is important to try it without hesitation. Do not avoid things before giving them a chance.
Transporting the double bass is the greatest challenge for a double bass player. Even when going to work, I am sometimes more worried about arriving safely than about oversleeping.
Public transportation in Japan is especially crowded, so I gave up on it early and have traveled by car since I first obtained my driver license. Also, airplane tickets are expensive.
