When did you realize you wanted to pursue music as a career?

I had the opportunity to perform at Carnegie Hall as part of a high school program, and that experience solidified my burgeoning desire to pursue music as a career. I knew that it would be a challenging career path, but making music gives me such happiness and fulfillment that I have no regrets.

How did you hear about TŌN? What inspired you to apply?

I heard about TŌN from friends who had previously been in the program. TŌN’s diverse repertoire and attention to issues concerning classical music in the modern age inspired me to apply.

What is your favorite piece of music, and why do you love it?

My favorite piece of music is Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 2. It is a beautiful symphony and it is fun to play as a violist. I have performed it at special times in my life, so it will always be important to me.

What has been your favorite experience as a musician?

My favorite experience as a musician was performing Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring at my undergraduate university. The concert hall was full, the energy was intense, and the orchestra was prepared. It was an intense experience that I will not forget.

Favorite non-classical musician or band

I would have to say Slowdive. Anything in the dream pop or shoegaze genres of music has a big place in my heart.

If you could play another instrument, what would it be?

I would choose the flute. I have never played a woodwind instrument before and have always loved the sound of the flute.

If you weren’t a musician, what would you be doing?

I would be doing something in the area of filmmaking. Film is another medium that has had a significant impact on my life and how I see the world.

Which three people, dead or alive, would you like to have dinner with and why?

David Lynch: He is one of my favorite artists and I know he would bring an interesting atmosphere to the dinner. Peter Falk: I would love to simply talk with him about anything. Arthur Schopenhauer: I admire his philosophy and would like to discuss it with him.

Tell us something about yourself that might surprise us

I played the drums for a jazz band in high school.

Piece of advice for a young classical musician

Even though the journey may be difficult, never give up on your dreams and try not to compare yourself to others. Anything is attainable if you truly set your mind to it.
