What is your earliest memory of classical music?
I grew up in Australia so I remember going to the Sydney Opera House to watch the Sydney Symphony Orchestra perform. I didn’t play an instrument yet but I remember thinking that I wanted to be on stage performing like the musicians.
Who is your biggest inspiration?
My dad has always been my greatest inspiration. Growing up, he filled our home with books, music and laughter. While my dad barely has any musical background, he made it his hobby to learn all there was to know about the flute. He has always been my biggest fan and I wouldn’t be where I am without his support and encouragement.
Which composer or genre of music do you feel you connect with the most?
Johannes Brahms
What has been your favorite experience as a musician?
I’ve had so many unforgettable experiences as a musician, however, I’ve always admired film scores. During my summer at the Brevard Music Festival we played the score to Star Wars: A New Hope while live-screening the film. There were thousands of attendees so the excitement and energy, both on and off-stage, was palpable! It was a performance experience I’ll never forget.
Favorite non-classical musician or band
It’s so hard to pick one because I truly love all genres of music, but some of my favorite musicians/ bands are Anderson .Paak, Oscar Peterson, Frank Ocean, Kacey Musgraves, and Queen.
If you could play another instrument, what would it be?
I would have loved to be a cellist. I feel very drawn to its robust yet warm sound and constantly find myself listening to cello repertoire.
Tell us something about yourself that might surprise us
I am an Australian who loves winter! One of my favorite hobbies is snowboarding, so I look forward to the snow every year.
Piece of advice for a young classical musician
As Beethoven once said, “Don’t only practice your art, but force your way into its secrets.”
